Sue Ann Van Dermyden

Sue Ann Van Dermyden, JD, AWI-CH, is a founding and Senior Partner of Van Dermyden Makus Law Corporation and Managing Partner of VM’s San Diego Office.  Sue Ann began as an employment litigator in 1993.  Since 2006, her practice focuses on conducting workplace and Title IX investigations. She also provides expert witness testimony on employment matters; and, conducts interactive and entertaining training seminars.  Sue Ann is an educator, serving as adjunct Professor at McGeorge School of Law teaching workplace investigations.  Sue Ann is also a shareholder and faculty of T9 Mastered, a training company focused on educating Title IX sexual assault investigators.

Sue Ann also serves as an expert witness in employment matters, regularly conducts training seminars on employment matters and Title IX and workplace investigations, and provides employment-related advice and counsel.


Sue Ann has been listed in Northern California Super Lawyers every year since 2010, and from 2015 to 2019 she was recognized by Sacramento Business Journal’s Best of the Bar and Sacramento Magazine’s list of Top Lawyers.  In 2015, Sue Ann was elected as a Fellow to the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers – the highest recognition by one’s colleagues of sustained outstanding performance in the profession, exemplifying integrity, dedication and excellence. 

Sue Ann is a founding member and Past President of the Association of Workplace Investigators (AWI).  She has served as Senior Faculty for AWI’s week-long Institute since 2012, and participated in the creation of the curriculum now taught to thousands of members.  She was previously a member of the Investigations Standards Technical Committee of ASIS International - charged with preparing standards and guidelines for workplace investigations. She currently serves as co-chair of the Workplace Investigations subcommittee of the American Bar Association’s Employment Rights and Responsibilities section.  

Sue Ann is a former partner of Hanson Bridgett Marcus Vlahos & Rudy.  She grew up on a fifth-generation farm in North Dakota and graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1983.  She moved to California and attended California State University, Chico, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science with a minor in Business Administration in 1990.  She attended University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law and received her Juris Doctor in 1993.  

Sue Ann has authored numerous articles on employment law and conducted countless training seminars. She regularly lectures on all topics involving employment issues and has written extensively in this area. For a partial listing of her speeches, presentations and publications, please see below.
