Sue Ann Van Dermyden and Deborah Maddux Are Both Speaking at The Annual AWI Conference – Oct. 14-15

AWI selected both Sue Ann Van Dermyden and Deborah Maddux to speak at their annual conference being held today and tomorrow in Denver, Colorado.

Sue Ann will be presenting with Julie Moore, president of Employment Practices Group. Their 60-minute presentation is titled A Day In The Life Of High Profile Harassers.

This session will cover the unique issues presented in recent high profile matters. Using lessons learned from allegations against Governor Cuomo and by Duchess Meagan Markle (and whatever breaking news occurs between submission of this proposal and the date of the conference), we will present a lively and informative session on unique issues presented for investigators. These complex investigations often involve claims outside the walls of the "workplace," include witnesses and parties not employed by the same employer, and play out in the press. We will discuss current issues, such as: when and how to interview non-employees; the impact of press releases and media coverage; confidentiality issues post-Banner; impact of boycotts and backlash; issues around off-duty conduct; and, calls for action prior to the conclusion of the investigation.

Deborah will be presenting with Keith Rohman of Public Interest Investigations and fellow senior trainer of T9 Mastered Training for Campus Investigators. Their hour-long presentation is titled Are you sure about this finding? Dealing with influence and pressure during an investigation.

Their interactive presentation will start by looking at what can make an investigator vulnerable to pressure, from the financial to the personal. It will examine the type of conduct that may interfere with the independent investigation and call into question its neutrality. Finally, the session will provide guidance on how investigators can navigate these tricky waters to protect the independence of our work while interacting with clients/employers who are understandably concerned about the outcome.
