Astro Bot, a new game released on the PlayStation (PS) 5 in September 2024, is a delightful mix of familiar nostalgia and modern innovation. You play as an endearing robot and must advance through levels of increasing difficulty to rescue his friends, fight his foes and ultimately, save the day. While the story is simple, I personally think this is part of the game’s appeal. The plot felt like a cozy hug reminiscent of beloved PS classics from the past. However, Astro Bot has some new tricks up its sleeve, too. First, the stunning graphics transport you to dozens of planets, each with their own vibrant personality, such as a casino in space, a Japanese bath house with robot monkeys, and a frozen tundra. Next, the PS controller itself contributes to an immersive experience and is equipped with speakers that play additional sounds, vibrations which correspond to the gameplay, as well as motion sensors for unique gameplay actions. Finally, the original soundtrack by composer Kenneth C M Young is nothing short of a delight. Overall, Astro Bot was a wonderful reminder to slow down and enjoy the little things, like playing as an adorable robot who saves the world.
