CALPELRA's 2023 Annual Training Conference, the 48th annual CALPELRA conference, will be held in beautiful Monterey, California, the week of November 14 - 17.
Both Eli Makus and Nikki Hall will present during the CALPELRASparks Segment “Grateful For Investigation Guidance” from 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 17.
CALPELRASparks are designed to provide sparks of inspiration and insight. CALPELRASparks include short (15-18 minute) presentations by separate dynamic speakers on separate topics around similar themes.
Eli Makus will present “Building Trust in the Investigative Process” at 9:00 a.m. in Steinbeck 3.
This session will discuss how you can build trust in a workplace investigative process. When faced with complaints of misconduct, employers must determine the most appropriate and effective response that will lead to faith in the investigative process. They must first determine whether to investigate the matter internally or to hire an external investigator. No matter whether an internal or external investigator is needed, the employer must ensure the investigator has no actual or perceived conflicts of interest. The employer and investigator must also navigate how to engage in appropriate strategic conversations related to the investigation without compromising the independence and neutrality of the investigation. In this Sparks segment you’ll learn strategies for traversing these issues and building trust in the investigative process.
Nikki Hall will present “Developing Resiliency When Facing Investigative Challenges Posed By Represented Parties” at 9:15 a.m. in Steinbeck 3.
This session will discuss how workplace investigators frequently face challenges when navigating investigations where parties and witnesses are represented by counsel or union representatives. Represented parties and witnesses may demand information to which they are not entitled, challenge the investigator’s independence and impartiality, and dispute employer attempts to assert the attorney client privilege for the investigation and its results, and as well as other demands that could interfere with the investigation. In order to conduct an investigation with confidence and skill and to build faith in the investigative process, investigators must learn effective ways to handle these common challenges. In this Sparks segment you'll learn practical and useful tips for effectively responding to tactics employed by represented parties.
