Deborah Maddux Introduces Herself as Chair of the CLA Labor and Employment Law Section Executive Committee
In the fall Chair’s message, I set aside the tradition of introducing myself as incoming Chair and promised to do so in a later edition when world and national events had calmed down. We still have challenges ahead, but I suspect many of you share my feelings of renewed hope as we move into 2021; thanks to the efforts of the scientific community, it appears we will soon have vaccines available that will start to turn the tide of the pandemic. Unfortunately, no one knows exactly how long that will take, and my tenure as Chair is only one year.

Building Up Communities Around the World

Tomorrow Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will become the first woman in history to lie in state in the US Capitol when her casket is placed in National Statuary Hall. Another first for a legend who paved the way for an entire generation of women to pursue careers as attorneys. That includes us – two female owners of a thriving law firm.

Leading Sexual Harassment Investigator Calls for Independent Probe in Antonio Brown Case
Sacramento—Sept. 16—Sue Ann Van Dermyden, a national leader in conducting independent investigations into allegations of sexual assault and harassment in sports and the workplace, today called on the National Football League and New England Patriots to move to conduct a “thorough, impartial, third-party” probe into rape allegations against star NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown.

Currently, Deborah serves as Secretary of the California Lawyers Association (CLA) Labor & Employment Law Section’s Executive Committee. Her term as Vice-Chair begins October 12, 2019.

Sue Ann Van Dermyden and Fred M. Plevin co-author “Four (Foot)Steps to Investigative Fortune: Lessons Learned From an Investigator and a Litigator”
This paper was presented at the American Employment Law Council 2017 Conference.

Van Dermyden Maddux Investigates Nevada Senator Mark Manendo
Justin Kochan investigated allegations made against Manendo. Kochan found that Manendo had engaged in at least 14 incidents of inappropriate conduct during the 2017 session, along with instances of misconduct from prior sessions. Manendo offered his resignation on July 18, 2017.

Sacramento Kings Hire Van Dermyden Maddux to Conduct Independent Investigation
Sacramento, CA – Today, the Sacramento Kings released the following statement:
“We take these allegations very seriously. We first learned about them from media reports on Monday evening.”
